Adventures in Rearing a Rambunctious Two-Year Old

It's amazing how fast 2 years has flown. Now I have a full-blown toddler, and getting glimpses of the feared terrible two's. There are good days, and there are bad days, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Some of Kasen's latest antics:

He's talking in several word sentences using a subject and predicate, often using all English or all Cantonese or mixing both.

He is identifying colors in both English and Cantonese - colors include Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Black, White and Brown. He also knows his letters and knows numbers up to 10.

He knows his fingers and their orientation, thanks to the songs "Where is Thumbkin" and "Finger Family." He likes to point out people's "Thumbkins" (their thumbs).

Kasen is climbing steps on his own as of the last few weeks - no assistance from us, and doesn't need to hold onto the banister. The cutest thing is that he'll use the same one foot to climb the stairs, usually the right. He'll happily sip a juice box and climb stairs at the same time. Funny kid.

He continues to be obsessed with animals and is learning more complicated ones now. His favorite books are One Fish, Two Fish by Dr. Seuss and Goodnight Moon - he loves looking for the mouse! The cool thing is is that his Dad reads it to him now.

He really. REALLY. Hates getting his teeth brushed. Boo. One time he got so worked up, crying so hard after Ken finished his brushing that Kasen threw up his HUGE dinner (if you knew just how hard it is to get him to eat a meal and be full, you would understand my devastation) and 8 ounces of milk right after his bath...and right before bed. I wanted to cry. Everyone was upset. But I took a deep breath, changed his clothes, and put him back to sleep with an empty bell while poor Ken had to clean up after Kasen's trail of chunky throw up. Sigh. We have tried to be a little more careful after that incident.

The tantrums come out of the blue and are usually short-lived. It's usually when you won't give him something he wants. I usually will change his mind and stop his tantrum mid cry if I can offer him something else that's appealing. I.e. no chocolate cookie before dinner, but you can have a veggie straw or a pretzel.

He began to enjoy eating ice cream in the last two weeks. He usually doesn't even like it nor ask for it even though he likes to identify it. Identifying it and actually liking it are two different things. He likes a little ice cream in a sugar/waffle cone, and in the last week enjoyed a Klondike ice cream sandwich at his second cousins'. Needless to say, I was VERY surprised.

When he has too much sugar he is BOUNCING. Off. The Walls!

He is obsessed with tea. He'll choose tea over juice any day. I have to water it down significantly and for sweetener I use honey. Kasen loves to ask me for "Honey Cha Cha".

For a while I had to chase him around to get food in his belly. As of yesterday he actually sat down in his "big boy" chair (Oxo Tot Booster Seat I got, it's awesome) and asked for specific items (on the menu was pan fried crocker fish, stir fried in shell shrimp, and chopped green beans tossed with ground pork with rice) ate his food. He wanted "crispy ngui ngui (fish)", "ha ha (shrimp), and "dao dao (beans)". It was messy, don't get me wronged...but he actually sat down and ate. And also let me feed him. It was glorious and amazing. Ken and I were so pleased we were in elated moods all evening.

He loves to say Please and Thank You. Lately he's been learning opposites, starting with Fat/Skinny and Smell Good/Smell Bad. We took a video or at least attempted to. He cracks me up.

When you give him a "big" piece of something he often says "Oooooh. Big one!" When you give him food, he'll hold it and he will say "Mmmm. Yummy!"

On Sunday he said "I love you Mommy" for the first time. Melted my heart. We told his Dad and he was jealous...until he said I love you to Ken. Heh!

Fun times.
